Environmental Impact of Wind Farms

We have used the SiteNoise module within our NoiseMap software to assess noise from wind farms in Britain, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. (The accepted authority in all three is the ETSU-R-97).

Our experience in Northern Ireland includes assessments at the following sites: Carn Hill, Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim; Corby Knowe, Co. Antrim; Cregganconroe, Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone; Inishiative, Co. Tyrone.  The assessment of noise from a wind farm is more complex that that for other industrial noise sources as both noise emissions and background noise levels tend to increase with increases in wind speed, but not at the same rate.  The use of measurements in still or calm conditions is inappropriate as, under these conditions, the turbines are not operational.
